Willows Beach home of Hands across the Sands is Songhees Land

Our Hands across the Sands event  in June was held at Willows Beach in Oak Bay.  Willows Beach is the Songhees traditional lands at Dalhousie Avenue off of Beach Drive.  Driving along Beach Drive you will view a large park leading to the beach and farther out you’ll see two islands, Discovery and Chatham.  Willows Beach was called Sitchamlth and was the site of Sitchamlth Village.  This aboriginal name refers to drift logs and trees that lodge themselves in the sand.
